I don't know a lot about swords, but I did a lot of research before buying it because it was a gift. Prompt delivery, gorgeous blade, very sharp. I couldn't find anything else as good as this for the price. You could definitely find better, but you'd be paying at least hundreds of dollars more. I was looking for a solid, practical sword for self defense purposes. After scouring Amazon, this is where I decided to take my chances. I am VERY pleased! This sword is definitely well made. I have no doubt it will hold up if and when I need to fully utilize it's potential. Solidly sharp edge out of the box. A little heavier than I had expected, but this is my first katana. The balance is slightly forward, but has a fantastic overall feel and great look. For the price, I couldn't be happier! I have full confidence this is capable of taking an intruders arm clean off.

Product came extremely early, in fact, a week early than expected and came in beautifully. Of course, there was the oil the blade upon unsheathing. But just looking at the scabbard was amazing, the spread of the red paint on it, so pretty. Blade came in undamaged and they sold it advertised.

this is a good quality sword for practicing but a fraction of the cost of a Japanese sword. Beware the blade is extremely sharp and highly recommend the maintenance kit as the sword needs to be cleaned and oiled every time you use it and at least monthly if just displayed.

This is an awesome weapon. Yes, weapon. This is not a toy or a show piece. This Katana came very sharp and battle ready. A few passes in my ceramic sharpener and it is razor sharp. The details, from the braided silk over sting ray skin hilt to the carbon steel blade are impressive. And I paid about half the price listed on the "Cold Steel" site. Bottom line... If you want a heavy sword that is a SWORD you can't beat this blade.

As far as a practice sword I have no clue if it is a good one or not, but as a kid's toy it is great. Well my nephew loves it, but I'm not sure if my sister and brother-in-law have the same feelings. He can ninja chop whatever he wants to now and not have to worry about his sword breaking.

This sword came just as shown, and is in top quality. There is but one minor complaint, but it doesn't affect the product in any way: There is a slight flaw where the cord wraps around the saya, and a small scratch going up an inch along the saya, from that point. Again, it's nothing to worry about. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase, and I will buy from the seller again, if I see another sword I like.

This sword is absolutely beautiful. Great quality, good weight and balance. My only issue with the sword is the claw and the wrapping that's tied to it. The wrapping is a really cheap looking material that appears worn on the edges. Also unlike most samural swords it's not beautifully tied/wrapped around the sword. Aside from that I really like the sword. Oh and one more thing, the picture used to show the sword is accurate so don't expect it to be white as it is in the movie. However in my opinion, the color of this sword/sheath is better than that of the movie.

These are great practice swords. I've been using them for full contact sparring for months now. The only thing I've noticed is the hand guards tend to loosen relatively easily during hard strikes. Not really an issue. After using traditional wooden bokken for years, I'm never going back. I don't know why they're so expensive all of a sudden.

The first thing I did when i got it was a paper test, after i wiped off all the oil/wax it was coated in for storage/shipping. it cut well, then reoiled it. There was a few scuffs on the blade up near the point but they didn't really concern me, I took off the handle to see the full tang, and getting the bamboo pegs out was sort of a difficult task for the first time, they were in there tight, and getting the handle away from the tsuba was very hard because of how tight it is, (same goes for putting it back on). all in all, a very well made sword, beautifully decorated tsuba, i looked at a lot of different functional swords 200 dollars and less before I decided on this one, and I'm happy I did. even with the scuffs, I still look forward to getting a display stand and displaying this thing. There is a tiny dent on the front tsuba guard, (the piece between the tsuba and the blade that can't even be removed (at least I couldn't)) however it's so small it's hardly noticable unless the light hits it just right, so it doesn't bother me.

Beautiful. Sharp. Lethal. Functional. I have two other katanas and one ko-katana but if I want to cut something in half this is the go to sword. Displayed on my living room wall with the others and looks like a monster in comparison. The extra long tsuka with the leather wrapping is beautiful and feels good in the hands. Gives great leverage and adds that element of surprise with an extra long reach.

this is a good quality sword for practicing but a fraction of the cost of a Japanese sword. Beware the blade is extremely sharp and highly recommend the maintenance kit as the sword needs to be cleaned and oiled every time you use it and at least monthly if just displayed.

At first it felt small in my hand. Very lightweight blade with nice long o-kissake' But the tsuba is kind of small so, this is a nice katana but somewhat feels wakizashi-ish, which i do like its just not the sword i was expecting so at first I was surprised is all. Fittings are tight blade is very nice. I think the o-kissake(Blade tip)

Top heavy, but I tell you if anybody comes into your house Late at night and, you break that sword out he'll be running out there in two seconds. You have to keep it oiled when storing it For long periods of time or it will rust.

If you ever want to buy a starter sword for a decent price this would absolutely be the best choice. The packaging was great with no damage in site and it came much faster then anticipated. The sword itself is finely made and was pretty sharp on arrival. I am not experienced with swords but I am very happy with my purchase.

This was or is a gift for my son who is in the Navy and stationed in Japan. He loves it and I bought a second one for one of my sons who was in the Marine Corp.. beautiful and very sharp for sure.. just love it and I am glad I chose this over others I had researched.. Best for the money too.

Excellent training value for your $$. I own several of these. They are basically unbreakable, unlike oak or kamagong wood bokken, of which I have broken many. These polypro bokken are not as rigid as wood, so be aware of that. Also you'll want to put tape on the grip area, the polypro gets slippery when you're training and your hands are sweaty.

Looked at reviews and other swords(like the one that comes with 3 and stand) and decided to get this one. BEST decision!! This sword is beautiful and well made and when you hold it in your hands you know where that extra money went. When I swing it around and pretend to slay zombies or intruders or whatever I know that the sword wont fly out of the handle. It came in plain packing but was undamaged, oiled and ready for battle or display. Well worth the money!!!!

Double Sweet!!!!!! Beautiful red and black blade highlights the folding laminations, solid construction. Hay bales yield smoothly. Details nice. I got it for the symbolism of the green and fish, and the red blade details -- Archangel St Raphael, the Source of Divine Healing (Green and fish) and Archangel St Euriel, the Source of Divine Wisdom (Red). Later, I might ask Ryan to have matching Wakizashi and Tanto made for me. I'll bet that the Archangel Raphael, the Source of Divine Healing, uses the sword to metaphorically cut out illness.

I received my sword today. I am very pleased with the quality... the only "issue" is that I received the Ronin version instead of the Dragon one I ordered but I must say, I am not even slightly disappointed (as a matter of fact.. in hindsight I think it might be better as the Dragon theme has become a bit cliche'). I will not be playing "warrior" with it so the shortcomings in hacking water bottles and buses do not apply.

The blade on this thing is incredibly sharp. The overall quality is very good, although it seems a bit blade heavy and unbalanced. I imagine if I were looking for an authentic (and perfect) samurai sword I would be spending thousands of dollars. Regardless, this is a beautiful and well made katana for the price.

Blade as far as I can tell is a good quality-more practical than fancy. The sheath fits well. not the best quality but it does the job. the hsndgusrd is pretty plain,and the only thing that bothered me is the pommel feels like plastic although it is quite well attached.

Got it as a gift for my Birthday. It is pure awesomeness!! No its not a sharp sword but its heavy and real steal meaning it can do serious damage with mild force. The detailing is amazing and the ray skin is legit. Im ready for the Zombies. I recommend it and HIGHLY recommend it for any Michonne fan!!!!

sword is as advertised. the tsuba,s gold trim is a bit rough and the blade isn't as sharp as I would expect. otherwise it's really a bang for the buck sword.

All of the cold steel training weapons I have purchased have arrived in a timely manner, in good condition and seem to be of excellent quality. My wife and I are not in any kind of training, we just like to "play swords" so our routines tend to be pretty vigorous and we have never experienced any bending or warping.

I am very impressed with this sword. The craftsmanship on the handle and hilt are very strong. It came sharpened, but not super sharp, it does come with a layer of grease to prevent rusting, Which is white. The entire construction is sturdy and has a great feel to it. I don't know if it's just an imprinted coloring on the blade or not. But I will say if it turns out to be a plain carbon steel blade, it still is worth way more then paid .

I have many Katanas and this one is my absolute favorite of all in this price ranage; and note it is a great value and should cost far more. Everything is real and it is truly combat ready. Beautiful in its simplicity. Magnificient piece of work. I bought another. Great feel. Buy! I own and have used several live blades. This one is of better construction than all but one, which cost me $1000. The blade is almost full tang and well secured with two pins. The blade is well designed with a nice long fuller and comes semi-sharp. It took little time, however, to get it sharp enough to cut hairs. I have not done any Tameshigiri with it yet but have full confidence.

Now I may be mistaken, but this looks just like the Musashi Bamboo Warrior katana. Which in that case isn't a pretty awesome bugmdget katana with real carbon steel and hamon. But it's also like only a $100 sword. Soo... Look for the authentic Musashi stamp or Smith signature on the tang.

After doing a lot of research on the types of steel and the way it is made, I settled on the mid range steel in this sword which is not as brittle at the higher rated steel but also maintains its edge better than the lower rated steel. This is a nice trade-off for optimal flexibility and sharpness. The sword itself came with a certificate of authenticity, which was a great touch since this made a beautiful gift for my friend.

this is a fantastic sword. the only issue with it is the handle wrap is not the same as shown in the image (same color as all other bio hazard green weapons) its well built and would make a good collection starter for any katana lover.

Purchased this Katana for my son. I am not terribly familiar with Japanese swords but am very happy with my purchase. The sword arrived significantly before the expected delivery date and was in perfect condition. Unpacked, the sword is contained in a decorative cloth bag with a gold cord with tassels. The wooden sheath is high gloss black with some decorative accents and very nice in appearance and quality. The Katana itself to me seems to be very well made with a sharp edge. Taking off the protective plastic sleeve and removing the factory oil protectant reveals a beautiful dark reddish/brown hue. I am extremely pleased with the Katana and sure my son will be thrilled. 100% satisfied.

I purchased this along with several other swords. Bottomline: you can really hurt someone or yourself with this weapon. However, if you plan on doing some sword battle with a couple of Samurai...you will definitely need either a better sword, or a 30 yard head start. But do not believe reviews that criticize this sword and it's sharpness or capabilities to do harm. It's sharp enough and will give even a novice an opportunity to train with something decent. If you want more "authenticity", you're going to have to reach into your wallet and pay a heck of a lot more.

Looked at reviews and other swords(like the one that comes with 3 and stand) and decided to get this one. BEST decision!! This sword is beautiful and well made and when you hold it in your hands you know where that extra money went. When I swing it around and pretend to slay zombies or intruders or whatever I know that the sword wont fly out of the handle. For anyone looking for an authentic cutting sword, this is a great choice. This is the more refined version of the Hanwei Practical Katana Sword. I did some research and this rated well in many sword enthsiast forums. It comes with a tag from Hanwei that provides a serial number to document that this is a Hanwei sword. The workmanship is so beautiful for a sword of this price that I have not had the heart to cut with it yet. I may just buy another one and keep one for decoration and dedicate the other for cutting practice.

I bought one of these to give as a gift, and then bought another to keep for myself. I ended up keeping both to use for playful sparring with former girlfriend. I have no martial arts or swordfighting training, so I am not qualified to offer an opinion on their effectiveness as authentic training items, but I enjoy them quite a bit. Be careful with use, as I imagine a strike to an unprotected part of the body could really hurt.

Very nice katana. Especially for the price. For 100 dollars you cannot beat this sword. I'm not a self proclaimed master swordsman like most of the people who write these reviews, and I'm not gonna pretend like I am. That being said I don't know for sure how katanas are graded traditionally so I'm giving this one 5 stars based on how it appeals to me. Aesthetically appealing across the board. Real hamon, everything was just as advertised. It came nice and sharp, although I plan on honing it more. I cut a few tree branches with ease, and some others weren't so easy (which may have been my technique or lack thereof). I don't know if it's razor sharp or not or how to determine that, but it sliced a paper into ribbons a few times. I would buy this sword again, in fact I probably will. No blade wobble. Yes it's made in China, what isn't these days.

I bought the sword for my husband as a gift. He loved all the detail of the sword. I live in an apartment and driver from UPS threw the package in my balcony. The package was labeled "fragile handle with care". When my husband open the box the sword was not damage at all. My husband could not stop talking about all the great detail he saw on the sword. Even though it was not manufactured in a traditional way, it is proof that modern manufacturing techniques can mass produce swords that any ancient samurai would have envied. Top heavy, but I tell you if anybody comes into your house Late at night and, you break that sword out he'll be running out there in two seconds. You have to keep it oiled when storing it For long periods of time or it will rust.

Traditional katana collectors may be put off by the lack of a hamon. But don't be fooled. A hamon is not necessary with the purity and heat treatment of the modern steel. It will resist chipping better than a traditional katana as well as take more abuse from flexing pressure. Hamons have disadvantages as well and should not be there if the the reasons for having them are non-existent.

This means there is a less likely hood of chipping or shattering after many uses. Do not let that fool you; however, because if you were to swing this at something, it will still do a lot of damage because while Polypropylene is "flexible," it is still very tough.

This is a pretty nice sword however for the money there are better swords. When i received mine i saw on the blade that it appeared to have 2 hamons... yeah one was much more prominent than the other and its hardly noticeable and blade also looks scratchy. the tsuka was very nice and all the fittings were nice. All in all this is a good buy, you will be satisfied

Beautiful sword! Overall, I was very happy with it when it came in the mail today. It's sharp, solid, and an overall good quality sword. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because the blade doesn't line up with the handle, making for poor cuts. If that were fixed, it would be an awesome battle ready sword.

The only drawback to the sword is it's not very sharp.I did buy a knife sharpener and used it for this blade and when done I wiped the blade down cut through the rag with scary ease.So sharpening the blade is the only thing I recommend.
